Marrakech's Iconic Jemaa el-Fna Square Set for Major Renovation

The authorities of Marrakech are working on the rehabilitation of Jemaa El Fna Square, a global cultural symbol and an integral part of the human heritage listed by UNESCO, and the souks that surround it.

The development project for the historic Jemaa el-Fna Square and the surrounding souks in the city of Marrakech will soon be launched, learns the site Rue20. This project aims to preserve the cultural heritage by respecting the historical character and architecture of the square, in order to improve its tourist attractiveness without undermining its foundations, but also to improve the infrastructure by developing the sewerage networks, public lighting, as well as the areas dedicated to visitors, thus ensuring a pleasant and adapted experience for all.

The introduction of shaded spaces, rest areas, and the improvement of pedestrian paths will contribute to creating a pleasant environment for everyone. According to the new design, it is planned to repave the square with materials adapted to the historical identity of Marrakech, to develop green spaces, to introduce trees and plant beds in a thoughtful manner. The project also includes the construction of areas dedicated to recreational activities, traditional markets and artistic performances, the development of the lighting system, etc.

The planned improvements concern public facilities such as toilets, benches and facilities facilitating access for people with special needs.

This project responds to the needs of the contemporary world. It is in line with the "Marrakech 2030: an ancient city in a new outfit" vision. Its budget amounts to 2 billion dirhams.
