Marrakech Hammam Prices Surge Amid Rising Wood Costs and Inflation

No sector of activity escapes the galloping inflation. In Marrakech, regular hammam users are struggling to understand the reasons why prices have almost doubled, allegedly to cope with the high cost of wood.

Visiting a hammam in Marrakech will cost you 3 or 5 dirhams more than the normal rate. Hammam regulars were expecting anything but an increase in prices in the majority of hammams in Marrakech. Far from being a decision made on the spur of the moment, it is the association of owners of traditional baths and showers in the ochre city that has taken care of it, in view of the evolution of the costs of certain products, including wood, reports the daily Al Akhbar.

But the high cost of wood is not the only difficulty for the hammams. There is also the water crisis that Morocco is going through. The local authorities have taken certain decisions, including the rationalization of water in order to fight against drought. The lack of water leads to a scarcity of customers, putting the hammams in difficulty.

Faced with all these difficulties, the owners of these establishments say they had no other choice but to increase the pricing. From now on, entering a hammam in Marrakech costs 15 dirhams for an adult, and 7 dirhams for a child. An increase that has provoked the protest of consumer protection associations, tired of being the ones who pay the high price.

Some of them have even decided to refer the matter to the Wali of the region to complain about this attitude that certain professions have, which, without taking into account social realities, proceed with increases.
