Marrakech has cause for concern: this Moroccan city is on the rise
Essaouira is emerging as an economic and authentic alternative to Marrakech for French travelers in February. Several tourists choose the port city to take advantage of rates about 40% cheaper while enjoying a spring-like climate. On site, the UNESCO-listed medina and the sea air offer an experience far from the hustle and bustle of the red city.
While Marrakech concentrates a large part of the stays with high occupancy rates, Essaouira seduces with its calm and reduced prices. A night in a riad costs an average of €65 there compared to €110 in Marrakech, representing a difference of 41%. The savings also concern flights to Essaouira-Mogador airport, often 25% cheaper, as well as catering which displays rates about 30% lower. This budget difference allows couples to make significant savings from accommodation for a stay in the "Morocco in February".
The climate remains particularly pleasant with temperatures rising to 20°C in the afternoon. Known by the nickname "City of the Trade Winds", Essaouira benefits from a permanent breeze that delights surf enthusiasts and those who enjoy long walks on the Diabat beach, explains Au Féminin. The atmosphere is conducive to relaxation thanks to what psychologists call the "Blue Mind" effect, a natural reduction in stress linked to the proximity of the ocean. The city offers an exceptional historical setting, having served as the backdrop for the Game of Thrones series and having once charmed artists like Jimi Hendrix.
Despite still cool sea water, the port city remains a choice destination for those fleeing the winter gloom without seeking mass tourism. The white alleys of the medina and the historic ramparts offer a more peaceful stay than the often saturated souks of the big cities. For travelers in search of light and authenticity, Essaouira is emerging as a strategic option combining historical charm and budget control.
