Marrakech’s Ancient Palm Oasis Threatened by Urban Growth and Tourism

A thousand-year-old oasis and green lung of Marrakech, the palm grove covers more than 16,000 hectares and is home to thousands of date palms. Unfortunately, it is now under threat.
The urban expansion of Marrakech is gradually encroaching on the oasis lands. In addition, the development of large tourism projects, such as hotel complexes and golf courses, is adding to the destruction of this fragile environment.
The intensive exploitation of water resources to supply these tourism projects and golf courses has a devastating impact on the oasis. Date palms, very sensitive to water stress, suffer from the decrease in the amount of available water. "Urban expansion and tourism projects, which consume huge amounts of water, disrupt the ecological balance and weaken the palm trees," warns Nourreddine Fattouhi, a water specialist professor at the Cadi Ayyad University of Marrakech.
The destruction of the Marrakech palm grove is not limited to the loss of a picturesque landscape. This natural space plays a crucial role in climate regulation and the preservation of local biodiversity. Its disappearance could have harmful ecological consequences on the entire region.
The increase in large tourism complexes at the heart of the oasis is exacerbating the situation. These projects drain enormous water resources and contribute to the degradation of the palm trees.
Currently, Marrakech has about ten golf courses, two of which are located within the oasis. Permits to build other courses have been requested, increasing the pressure on water resources.
Faced with these growing threats, it is crucial to take measures to protect the Marrakech oasis, warn local associations. The implementation of sustainable development policies and raising awareness among populations and tourists about the importance of this fragile environment are essential actions to preserve this unique natural heritage.
