Morocco-Spain Undersea Tunnel Project Set to Begin in 2030, Linking to Major Gas Pipeline

The Spanish study company (SECEGSA) announced that the construction work on the Morocco-Spain tunnel could start in 2030, reports the daily Assabah, specifying that experts from the two countries will meet soon for this purpose. For the Spanish company, the project has never been abandoned. Proof of this, the Moroccan and Spanish Ministers of Transport discussed the subject in April 2021, recalls the same source.

The construction of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline and the normalization of relations between Spain and Morocco have put this project of building the intercontinental tunnel under the Strait, dedicated to the transport of goods and the movement of people, back on the table. With these two infrastructures, the cost of transporting natural gas from Africa and the Middle East to Europe will be considerably reduced, assures the same source.

The World Bank, the European Investment Bank, the African Development Bank and many Arab donors are interested in the project. SECEGSA has already presented to the Spanish government all the studies carried out over the past 35 years as part of this tunnel project that will connect Tangier to Tarifa. It will be 24 km long. The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, 5,660 km long, will cross 12 states from Africa to the Atlantic before connecting to Europe.
