Morocco changes the appearance of the Sebta border

The development plan provides for a gradual closure of the spaces in order to allow the continuity of transit. The operations begin with the lower area, close to the sea and usually dedicated to entry into Ceuta, which will be closed to vehicles. As a result, all motor vehicle traffic will be shifted to the upper area. This will be reorganized into six lanes: three for the exit from Ceuta to Morocco and three for the opposite direction. Once the lower part has been rehabilitated, the construction site will move to the upper area. Pedestrian traffic will remain operational without change.

Disruptions and queues to be expected

This concentration of inbound and outbound flows in a single space will have an impact on traffic fluidity. The Moroccan authorities have warned that this temporary configuration would result in an increase in traffic jams, complicating the usual transit, particularly during peak hours and periods of high traffic.

These inconveniences are linked to a desire to upgrade the infrastructure. The ultimate goal of this work is to improve the passport control system and modernize the facilities on the Moroccan side, while Spain continues the gradual deployment of its smart border.
