Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Acid Attack on Ex-Partner in Marseille

A man was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison by the Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal. He is accused of having sprayed sulfuric acid on his ex-partner, as he did not accept the separation.

Sentenced in the first instance by the Marseille Correctional Court to 18 years in prison in July 2019 for armed violence, premeditation, recidivism and by ex-cohabitant, the sentence of Karim Bouembassa, 41, was revised downwards on Wednesday, reports 20minutes.fr.

The incident dates back to June 2018, when the defendant, after months of harassment and violence, had attacked his ex-partner in a street in Marseille. The injuries could have been aggravated if a shopkeeper had not abundantly rinsed the victim with water.

According to the same media, the defendant wanted to disfigure his ex-partner and take away her desire to rebuild her life. He wanted her to "be a living dead, a civil death that deprives her of any woman’s life". For the lawyer, the ex-partner has achieved his goal by psychologically destroying the mother of their two children.

In its ruling, the court of appeal refers to a "relationship of control". As for the judges, they reduced the initial sentence of 18 years imposed by the Marseille criminal court to 15 years in prison.
