Majority of Moroccan Expats Plan Permanent Return, Study Finds

Nearly 74% of Moroccans living abroad plan to return to live in Morocco one day, according to a study carried out by the site "ReKrute". However, this return is subject to several parameters related to the migrant’s social situation.

Moroccans residing abroad remain attached to their motherland. According to the daily Al Massae, those who dream of returning to their homeland are investing in the country. The same media, citing a survey by the "Rekrute" site, reports that this return will be of great benefit to the country in terms of expertise and experience in several fields of activity.

The same source specifies that 52% of the respondents link their return to contributing to the development of the country, while 53% of them intend to pursue a professional career after having acquired experience abroad. Further on, it adds that the return to the homeland is linked, for 48% of Moroccans living abroad, to the proximity of the family, the launch of their own projects in Morocco (31%) and the standard of living (10%).

However, this return remains subject to several parameters related in particular to age, professional situation and social conditions, according to the same study. Thus, 59% of Moroccans living abroad consider that the labor market is not favorable, while 53% speak of social pressure, 48% fear a lack of professional visibility and 35% raise the issue of wages.

Legal obstacles are also highlighted by the study, particularly regarding the professional career of certain expert executives, who could be obliged to start their academic career from scratch if they wish to settle in Morocco.
