Major Real Estate Fraud Case Reopens in Northern Morocco, Implicating Notary and Officials

Five years later, the Court of Appeal of Tétouan is reviving one of the biggest real estate scandals of recent years in the North of the Kingdom. A famous notary, his wife, as well as Adouls, and even former presidents of the municipality of Martil are among the accused.
The justice system clearly does not want to stop there. The Court of Appeal of Tétouan is about to reopen this week the file known as the real estate scandal in which 21 people are involved, including a well-known notary in the North of the Kingdom, his wife, as well as Adouls, and even former presidents of the municipality of Martil. It is a vast fraud operation related to a real estate project. The same apartments have been sold several times to different people. Recently, the file was the subject of an inspection mission, the members of which came to inquire about the proper conduct of the legal proceedings in Tétouan, reports the Arabic-language daily Al Akhbar. The judge in charge of this case has issued an order. All the accused have therefore been summoned and will have to appear before the Court.
Suspended since 2018, the handling of this file had fallen behind due to many factors, including a certain heaviness in the procedures to be carried out, even though only two of the 21 defendants had appeared before the judge. Prison sentences ranging from 5 to 7 years had been imposed on the accused. The multiple requests for provisional release of the main defendant had been rejected by the court.
According to the justice system, the victims of this vast scam related to a real estate project in the seaside town of Martil are more than a hundred. This scam generated several tens of millions of dirhams.
