Major Drug Trafficking Trial Begins in Fez, Morocco: Hospital Staff and Doctors Accused

The trial of the 11 accused in the case of the diversion of drugs from the pharmacy of the Fez University Hospital opened on Tuesday before the criminal chamber of the court of first instance.
While the two main "instigators", in particular a commercial representative and an anesthesia nurse at the university hospital, have been placed in pre-trial detention in the Bourkaiz prison, the 9 other suspects, mostly doctors and owners of private clinics in Fez, Meknes and Beni Mellal, have been released on bail.
The arrests took place last March, following an anonymous complaint accusing employees and officials within the Fez University Hospital of diverting expensive drugs and medical devices.
The preliminary investigation, conducted by the judicial police, has shed light on an organized network whose ramifications extend from within the university hospital to private clinics.
