In Lyon, natives of Morocco account for 8%

The INSEE study is formal: only one in four residents (26%) was born in Lyon. This statistic places the capital of the Gauls among the least "indigenous" cities in France, just behind Bordeaux. In this mixing, residents born abroad make up 18% of the total population. Among them, natives of Morocco (7,400 people) form the second largest community, accounting for 8% of the total foreign population, behind Algeria (22%) and ahead of Tunisia (7%).

The decline of natives, who were still 34% in 2006, is technically explained by the closure of maternity wards within the walls, but above all by the economic attractiveness of the city, explains Actu.fr. Lyon has become a major university and professional transit hub, attracting a young and mobile population from other regions or from abroad.

The geography of this diversity remains, however, marked. The working-class districts (8th and 9th) concentrate 22% of residents born abroad. Conversely, the 6th arrondissement attracts a specific internal migration: it is the sector with the most natives of Paris and Hauts-de-Seine, illustrating gentrification by national rather than international populations.
