Low Turnout Mars Morocco's Annual Diaspora Day Event

The 2019 edition of the National Day of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) took place, as usual, with only the presence of a handful of Moroccans of the World. At the initiative of the Regional Investment Center (CRI) of Fez-Meknes, this meeting was attended by officials and partner administrations.

Disinterest or boycott? This is the whole question raised by the absence of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) at their National Day on August 10, 2019. Contrary to a turnout worthy of the first editions, we note only a low participation of those concerned, in Fez, reports L’Economiste.

This meeting welcomed the officials and partner administrations, with the exception of the MREs who are becoming increasingly rare at these "sterile" meetings, especially if they do not bring anything new.

Instead of the interested parties, the meeting brought together representatives of customs, land registry, urban agency and banks. The CGEM, the CRT, Al Omrane, and ONDA also made the trip. However, most of the stands were idle, waiting for the coffee break.

The organizers also ran into the problem related to languages. For example, at the customs stand, an MRE was wondering about the procedures for importing and clearing new vehicles but, due to the lack of language, the customs officer remained evasive. The same observation applies to other exhibitors who admit to having played the role of extras during this annual day marked, this year, by the summer holidays and the Eid al-Adha festival.
