UN Launches Digital Campaign to Combat Child Marriage in Morocco

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Morocco is supporting a global campaign to fight child marriage. The day of the celebration of Valentine’s Day was chosen as the starting point for this drama affecting 650 million women and girls worldwide.
The organizers aim to help populations become aware of the damage caused by child marriage. In addition to UNFPA, the campaign is led by women’s and girls’ rights activists, institutions and opinion leaders among artists, journalists and influencers.
Valentine’s Day was chosen because under the pretext of celebrating love, girls are given in marriage. It is estimated that 37,000 girls are married annually before reaching their 18th birthday.
For most, they face all kinds of violence, early pregnancies and difficult, sometimes fatal, childbirths. "Convinced that it is necessary to end child marriage, we now know that it is possible. Studies have shown that initiatives to end child marriage do not require large financial resources. It takes about $600 to have a child’s marriage annulled," the organizers explained.
