Lamine Yamal breaks a historic record held by Kylian Mbappé

Lamine Yamal has just broken a precocity record held by Kylian Mbappé in the Champions League. The Barcelona prodigy of Moroccan origin has become the youngest player in history to score ten goals in the prestigious European competition.

The striker scored a goal during Barcelona’s demolition of Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, reaching this symbolic milestone at the age of 18 years and 245 days. He thus surpasses the previous record set by the Frenchman in 2018 (18 years and 350 days), even though he needed 31 matches to achieve it, compared to only 15 for his elder.

These two phenomena remain to date the only footballers in the history of the tournament to have found the net ten times before the age of 19. This season, the Spaniard is breaking all the norms: he has recently crossed the 50-goal mark in his career (club and national team) two years ahead of Lionel Messi and three ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

His teammate Robert Lewandowski, who himself took advantage of this match to score against a 41st different opponent, had anticipated this dazzling rise as early as August. "Lamine, we can no longer say that he is a child. [...] He is a great player and an excellent guy off the field. This year, he will play even better, because he also has more experience," the Polish veteran had pointed out.
