32 km a Day: Mathis Walks for Moroccan Children and Raises 30,000 Euros

Mathis Vérité, an 18-year-old high school student from Normandy, has sparked a vast wave of solidarity thanks to a daily sporting challenge. By walking the distance between his home and his high school to raise funds for bicycles for children in Morocco, he raised more than 30 000 euros this Thursday, smashing his initial target.

A final-year student’s wager has turned into a charitable phenomenon. Since January 26, Mathis Vérité has been maintaining a grueling pace: walking from his home in Troarn to his high school in Caen, making a daily 32-kilometer round trip. The goal of this three-week, 480-km journey is to raise public awareness of the difficulties accessing education in rural areas of southern Morocco.

The initiative aims to support the association « Les Enfants du désert », an NGO based in the Kingdom since 2005, by funding the purchase of bicycles for students forced to travel long distances to reach their school, reports Actu.fr.

While the teenager initially hoped to raise 1 300 euros to purchase ten bicycles, media coverage of his effort triggered an influx of donations. This Thursday, February 5, 2026, the online fundraiser shows 30 113 euros, donated by more than one thousand contributors.

Despite the accumulated physical fatigue, the young man plans to continue his challenge until February 13. He subsequently hopes to travel personally to Morocco to deliver the equipment funded by this solidarity walk.
