Jordan Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sahara Initiative at UN General Assembly

Monday 14 October 2019, by Sylvanus

Jordan has reaffirmed its support for the Moroccan initiative on the Sahara during the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In Jordan’s eyes, the Moroccan initiative on the Sahara is "a serious and realistic mechanism that takes into account the specificities of the region, the territorial integrity and the full sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its territory, while remaining in line with the United Nations Charter". For it, the Moroccan option is indeed in line with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council, in particular resolution 2468, as well as those of the General Assembly.

Sima Sami Bahous, the Representative of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the 4th Committee of the General Assembly, took the opportunity to congratulate Morocco for its positive engagement in the search for a definitive political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue based on compromise, through the presentation of the autonomy initiative.

Sima Sami Bahous also commended the efforts made by Morocco to develop the southern provinces and improve the living standards of their populations who benefit from the resources of the region. The Representative of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan also highly appreciated the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara for the progress made in the political process towards a realistic and lasting solution to this issue.

"Solidarity and mutual assistance are two constant values in the fraternal and historical relations between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the brotherly Kingdom of Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II and his brother His Majesty King Mohammed VI," she said.
