Jordan’s King Abdullah II Seeks to Broker Morocco-Algeria Reconciliation

King Abdullah II of Jordan is said to have offered his services to restore relations between Rabat and Algiers. The negotiations would be very advanced and could relaunch regional integration.
According to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the King of Jordan would have insisted on a meeting between the Algerian president and King Mohammed VI, which should take place in Switzerland. The "mediator’s" efforts would have received the approval of the Algerian side.
"We support the mediation of King Abdullah to reopen the Morocco-Spain gas pipeline. I think it can happen very soon, and it will be a step to normalize the trade relationship with Spain," confides an Algerian diplomat who requested anonymity.
Morocco and Algeria have always had difficult relations that have cooled over time, especially from 1994, following Rabat’s decision to impose visas on Algerian nationals after the Marrakech attack. In response to this decision, Algeria decided to close its borders with Morocco, leading to a series of conflicts until the severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2021.
Recently, King Mohammed VI has, again, invited President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to a "dialogue" in Morocco, for not having been able to do so during the Arab League summit in Algiers last November.
