Jailed Moroccan Protest Leaders Seek to Renounce Citizenship, Citing Injustice

Nasser Zefzafi, leader of the "Hirak" protest movement, and five other detained activists have requested to be deprived of their Moroccan nationality. It was his father who made this known on social media.

Nasser Zefzafi, Nabil Ahamjik, Ouassim el Boustati, Samir Ighid, Mohamed el Haki and Zakaria Adechour have addressed their request to the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the King at the Court of Cassation. They denounced the "instrumentalization of justice", which rejected the evidence of their innocence", indicates a statement read by Ahmed Zefzafi.

Also, the text reported the "torture" that the detainees claim to have suffered during their interrogations, without failing to mention facts mentioned in an official report "buried" by the authorities. For its part, the prison administration has refuted these allegations.

Nasser Zefzafi and the detained activists are now staying in the Fès prison since the confirmation of their sentences on appeal. This 39-year-old former unemployed man who became the leader of the "Hirak" movement was sentenced to 20 years in prison for "conspiracy to undermine the security of the State".

To recall, the "Hirak" is a peaceful movement born following the death, in October 2016, of a fish vendor, crushed in a garbage truck. He was trying to oppose the seizure of his merchandise.
