Jailed Moroccan Journalist Raissouni Hospitalized in Critical Condition, Wife Reports

Incarcerated at the local prison of Oukacha in Casablanca, journalist Souleimane Raissouni was transferred on Monday to the prison clinic in critical condition, according to his wife Kholoud Mokhtari. According to her, the editor-in-chief of the daily Akhbar Al Yaoum would have his right leg paralyzed.
It was in a Facebook post that Kholoud Mokhtari, the journalist’s wife, confided in her husband’s state of health. "Souleimane called me today, and I learned that he will spend days in the hospital ward of the prison. This journalist greets you, greets all those who demand justice for him and his colleague, the journalist Omar Al Radi, who is also suffering behind bars. The Merciful God," she added.
Souleimane Raissouni was arrested on Friday, May 22, 2020 in Casablanca, for alleged acts of sexual assault with violence and sequestration. The journalist’s arrest follows the publication of an activist from the LGBT community, who accuses him of "jumping on him" and "taking advantage of his weakness and moral health to satisfy his sexual desires."
According to a statement made by his lawyer Saïd Benhoummani, the journalist risks up to 10 years in prison, according to the provisions of Article 485 of the Penal Code.
