"Italian Transit Crisis: Moroccan Drivers to Rescue Struggling Bus Routes"
The Italian public transport company "Start Romagna" has announced a massive recruitment of professional bus drivers in Morocco to address the acute shortage of skilled labor. The selected candidates will be deployed in the provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini.
By launching this recruitment campaign, the company wants to fill a deficit of about 30 to 40 drivers and ensure the continuity of the service, especially with the retirement of some drivers. This situation has affected the quality of the service and forced it to cancel certain lines. The lack of skilled labor is a national problem, said the company’s president, Andrea Corsini, specifying that the country needs several tens of thousands of drivers, according to estimates from the transport association "Asstra".
The low interest in these positions is explained by the difficult working conditions, particularly the fact of working in the evening and on public holidays, and the exposure to situations of violence from some passengers. As part of this recruitment, "Start Romagna" will collaborate with a Moroccan agency to select candidates holding driver’s licenses that can be converted to European licenses.
The company is also studying the possibility of allocating housing subsidies to the selected candidates and setting up sponsorship programs with friends to attract more candidates. In addition, the company is working to modernize its fleet with the acquisition of 340 new electric, hybrid or natural gas buses worth 120 million euros by 2028. The purchase of these vehicles is part of efforts to reduce the environmental impact and improve the quality of public transport.
