Israelis Seek Terrorism Recognition for 1948 Morocco Riots, Demand Reparations

The riots that broke out in Oujda and Jerada in 1948 following the proclamation of the independence of the State of Israel remain a poignant memory for many Israelis. Some of them are calling on the authorities of the country to consider their murdered relatives as victims of terrorism and are demanding reparations.
Israelis are not about to forget this painful past. They have signed a petition by the hundreds to demand reparation, recognition of the murders of Jews in Morocco as acts of terrorism. Through this request, they intend to honor the memory of the dead. Among the petitioners is Abraham Cohen, whose 17 family members were murdered, reports Israel Hayom.
The declaration of independence of the State of Israel proclaimed on May 14, 1948 had aroused genuine enthusiasm within the Jewish community in Morocco. Some of them had then decided to join Israel. A decision that will not be to the liking of the Moroccan Muslims who supported the general struggle of the Arab world against the State of Israel. The king of the time, Mohammed V, had also opposed the departure of the Jews.
On June 7, 1948, Muslim employees whose employers are Jewish refuse to go to work. Following an altercation, a Jew stabs a Muslim in Oujda. Riots break out in the cities of Oujda and Jerada. Five Jews were killed in the first city and 37 others, including Rabbi Moshe Cohen and his family, in the second city.
