Israeli Firm to Build $10 Million Fish Farm in Tangier, Boosting Morocco’s Aquaculture Sector

A marine fish farm worth 10 million euros will soon be built in the Tangier region by the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA), following an agreement signed during the last Halieutis international fair in Agadir. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Israeli company Agrigo, specialized in the development of turnkey agricultural complexes.
According to Houcine Nibani, responsible for the North Africa region of the Global Conservation Coach Network (CCNet), most of the current Moroccan farms are more dedicated to shellfish farming than to fish farming. This new farm is being set up as part of the measures taken by the government to "reduce the pressure on fishery resources".
Morocco currently has 60 active farms employing around 600 people. According to FAO data, annual fishery production is around 1.4 million tons, while marine aquaculture only accounts for 1,300 tons. Construction work on this new farm should begin next April.
