Islamist Union UNTM Loses Representative Status in Morocco's Labor Elections

The debacle of the National Union of Labor in Morocco (UNTM), the trade union arm of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), in the professional elections is confirmed. It definitively loses its status as a representative union and has little chance of being represented in the second chamber.

Tough times for the UNTM. At the end of the latest professional elections, the Islamist union obtained 5.63% of the elected representatives. A rate below the required 6% threshold. As a result, it definitively loses its status as a representative union and will no longer be able to participate in the social dialogue rounds in the next six years, analyzes La Vie éco. The PJD’s trade union arm suffered a serious setback in the main sectors of the civil service and in the local authorities: Higher Education, Justice, Health, Telecommunications, etc.

On Friday, Mohamed Amekraz, Minister of Labor and Professional Integration, announced the results of the elections of employee representatives in the private sector. It emerges that the PJD union has lost half of its elected representatives, falling from fifth to sixth place since the 2015 elections. In total, 1,326 of the workers’ delegates are elected (5.63%) against 2,572 delegates in 2015 (7.36%).

With this debacle, the union of the Islamist party has little chance of being represented in the second Chamber.
