Iran Backs Polisario Front, Calls for Sahara Self-Determination at UN

Iran provides evidence that it had conspired in secret in Algiers three years ago against Morocco. This is what can be deduced from the recent statements of an Iranian diplomat on the Sahara, supporting the Polisario.
An advisor to Iran’s diplomatic mission to the UN has expressed his country’s position, supporting self-determination in the Sahara, reports the APS. The Iranian diplomat called on Morocco to "stop interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and challenging their regional security," the same source said. He also insisted on the self-determination that the international community is committed to implementing the UN recommendations on the Sahara.
These statements show that Iran had conspired in secret in Algiers against Morocco and remains a supporter of the Polisario. In 2018, Morocco had decided to cut ties with this country after demonstrating, with evidence, the links that Iranian diplomats in Algeria were weaving with the Polisario. At the time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, had accused the Lebanese Hezbollah of being involved in the sending of weapons to the Polisario, through a member of the Iranian embassy in Algiers.
During a press conference, the head of Moroccan diplomacy explained that the decision constituted "a response to the involvement of Iran via Hezbollah in an alliance with the Polisario aimed at undermining Morocco’s security and its higher interests." Three years after the break, the alliance of Iran, Algeria, the Polisario and Hezbollah seems to still be functional.
