EU Invests €1.5 Million to Modernize Moroccan Prison System

The European Union (EU) has provided 1.5 million euros in funding to Morocco to upgrade the country’s prisons. This is the result of the Morocco-EU institutional twinning for support to strengthen the institutional capacities of the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR).

Strengthening the institutional capacities and skills of the various categories of officials of the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) over a period of 30 months. This is the full scope of the funding that Morocco has received from the European Union (EU) as part of the institutional twinning.

In this sense, the prison administration of the French Ministry of Justice, the main partner in this twinning, has mobilized 50 European experts in Morocco, who come from various bodies and organizations.

During a mid-term conference of this twinning, held last Thursday, October 3 in Rabat, Mohamed Salah Tamek, Delegate General for Prison Administration and Reintegration, hinted that this twinning is in line with the DGAPR’s strategy.

Moreover, according to him, the training of personnel for an optimization of the prospects for implementing the Delegation’s policy is one of the important axes of the institution.

Mohamed Salah Tamek also noted: "In Morocco as in Europe, prison administrations, constantly faced with multiple issues, are required to manage often complex situations related to detention conditions, but also to working conditions of staff and the relationships between the latter and the detainees".
