Investigation Launched After Three Pregnant Women Die During C-Sections in Casablanca Clinic

We know a little more about the death of three pregnant women in a private clinic in Casablanca during their Caesarean deliveries on January 8, 2025.

A batch of bupivacaine, an anesthetic, would be the cause of the death of these women. "Although this product is at the center of the suspicions, only the autopsy report will make it possible to determine the circumstances precisely," the management of the Jnane Taddart establishment declared to Médias24, specifying that an investigation is underway and that a commission from the Ministry of Health, accompanied by the judicial authorities, has been dispatched to the site. The management says it "deeply regrets this incident. This is an unprecedented situation for us. Since the opening of the clinic in 2023, we have performed approximately 2,750 Caesarean deliveries without recording a single death."

Similar cases were about to be recorded in another clinic. "Similar incidents occurred in a private clinic in Berrechid, but this time without being fatal, and with the same product from the same batch," reports a source close to the Casablanca clinic. Enough to raise concerns about the use of bupivacaine. According to a pharmaceutical source, this product is manufactured by Mylan in France and imported in finished form. In total, 180,000 or 200,000 ampoules have been used in Morocco, the same source said, stating that lethal or undesirable effects would logically have been numerous. This anesthetic will be subjected to analysis and then submitted to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
