Infertility Rates Rise Among Moroccan Couples: Climate Change and Lifestyle Factors Blamed

Infertility affects some 15% of Moroccan couples, on a continuous rise in recent years. Experts now give the reasons for this.
According to Hassan Boudrar, a gynecologist specializing in reproductive medicine, the fertility of men and women has seen a significant decline in recent years. According to the gynecologist, around 13 to 15% of Moroccan couples suffer from infertility.
Present at the 5th International Symposium on Fertility, the doctor explained that this high rate is justified by the impact of climate change, the change in eating habits, the long study path for women and men, as well as the postponement of the age of marriage.
The specialist, who is also the director of a fertility clinic, announced that the in vitro fertilization technique has been practiced nearly 25,000 times in Morocco. Even if this figure is still low compared to other neighboring countries, the gynecologist specified that the care of couples suffering from infertility represents a major issue that will have to be addressed with appropriate solutions.
For his part, Professor Samir Hamamah, head of the Department of Reproductive Biology at the University Hospital Center (CHU) of Montpellier (France), advocated for the integration of fertility preservation into reproductive health, while recommending that men and women undergo an annual check-up.
For his part, Professor Mats Brännström, who led the medical team that performed the world’s first uterus transplant operation, stressed that the global scientific community needs 10 to 20 years of clinical trials to be able to further develop this medical technique, presented as a major breakthrough in the fight against infertility.
