Illegal Well Drilling Depletes Marrakech’s Water Supply Amid Severe Drought

Farmers are drilling unauthorized wells in the Marrakech region, affecting the water table during this period of severe drought.
In the commune of Tameslouht, near Marrakech, these individuals drill wells at night, destroying the region’s water table. The proliferation of unauthorized well drilling in the region during this period of severe drought has alerted the competent authorities, who have stepped up controls in order to put an end to these practices.
Agricultural landowners and investors in the region are engaging in these practices, which have negative repercussions on the region’s water resources. To recall, the government council approved in December the draft decree No. 2.23.105 relating to the authorization of drilling in order to meet the needs for water resources.
