Tangier’s Ancient Caves of Hercules at Risk from Nearby Construction Projects

Real estate developments including hotels constitute a real danger for the Caves of Hercules in Tangier. It is urgent to protect this archaeological, mythological and tourist site.
Located 14 km west of Tangier at the Atlantic entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, the Caves of Hercules are threatened by numerous real estate projects. And the threats hanging over this mythological site are great. It is planned that a parking lot will be built near this tourist monument. These constructions could lead to risks of collapse, warns the daily Al Akhbar. The existing cracks could worsen, as the authorities have, in the past, acted quickly to intervene and close certain accesses to protect this model of ecotourism.
If nothing is done, this natural wonder will shrink like a pebble in a few years. According to the newspaper, the Caves of Hercules "are already weakened by the nearby constructions", which have also had an impact on the landscape to the detriment of the neighboring natural caves to which the site was linked.
