Hundreds of Fish Found Dead in Morocco’s Massa River, Authorities Investigate

Hundreds of fish, mainly mullets, found dead floating on the surface of the Massa wadi where they have piled up on the left bank of the valley.
The Environmental Brigade of the Royal Gendarmerie and the National Laboratory for Studies and Pollution Monitoring have taken water samples to determine the circumstances of this environmental situation, reports lesecos.ma.
Pending the detailed report on the situation, the fish that have surfaced have been buried in a site near the eutrophication site. According to the Regional Environment Observatory, this situation is mainly attributed to the climatic conditions that have characterized the area with the absence of precipitation.
For several months, the area has experienced an increase in temperature that has reached 36°C, with the effect of evaporation of the water. This, according to the specialists, has caused the lack of oxygen linked to the high water temperature and the asphyxiation of the environment by a strong production of algae.
