Hundreds of Dead Fish Wash Up in Mohammedia as Pollution Crisis Hits Moroccan Coast

In Mohammedia, hundreds of dead fish are stranded on the estuary of the Oued Nfifikh. The city is going through an unprecedented environmental situation. What are the causes?
"Mohammedia is going through an unprecedented environmental situation," said the community actor Mohamed Sehmi to 2M. "Oued Nfifikh (Nfifikh valley in Arabic) is suffering the ravages of pollution, which is 90% caused by humans." He attributes the remaining 10% to drought, lack of rainfall and climate change.

In a statement to the SNRT News television channel, Abdelmajid Sahraoui, president of the Mohammedia Association of Biology Teachers, explained that the blockage of the estuary of the valley by sand is the cause of the ongoing disaster. According to him, this blockage has caused stagnation of the water, leading to a decrease in the oxygen level in the water and ultimately the disappearance of the local marine life.
The official proposes a therapy to the Ministry of Water and Equipment to solve this problem. It is a matter of widening the access points connecting the valley to the sea.
