Human Rights Watch Official Detained in Algeria Ahead of Protest

Former Editor-in-Chief of the weeklies TelQuel and Nichan, Ahmed Réda Benchemsi, was arrested by the Algerian authorities on the evening of Friday, August 9, 2019. He arrived in Algeria that same day with the intention of participating in a demonstration against the regime in place.
The journalist will be brought before the Algerian justice system so that it can deliberate on his case. No information has leaked from the Algerian security authorities about the charges brought against him.
Residing in the United States, Réda Benchemsi currently holds the position of Director of Communication and Advocacy for the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region at the organization Human Rights Watch.
According to Algérie Éco, the journalist was taken to a police station while participating in a popular movement. He was released around midnight the same day.
