Human Rights Groups Urge Morocco to Halt Extradition of Uyghur Activist to China

Imprisoned in Morocco and threatened with extradition to China, Uyghur activist Yidiresi Aishan is receiving an avalanche of support. This time, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) has pleaded for the "cancellation" of the procedure.

FIDH stated in a press release that, in collaboration with a partner human rights organization, it had asked the Moroccan authorities to "cancel" the extradition procedure of this Uyghur activist and end his detention, given the risk that he would be "tortured" in China.

The two organizations also called on Morocco "to find an alternative solution to Aishan’s detention, which has lasted for a year and which, in the absence of periodic review, individual assessment and valid grounds, may constitute arbitrary detention," the note states.

To recall, Yidiresi Aishan, a 35-year-old computer scientist, was arrested in July 2021 on the basis of a red notice issued by Interpol at China’s request and based on accusations of belonging to a terrorist organization. Last December, the Court of Cassation of Rabat issued a favorable opinion on the request for his extradition. Since this ruling, several national and international organizations have stepped forward to plead his case.
