Human Rights Groups Urge Morocco to Halt Extradition of Uyghur Activist to China

Several international human rights organizations have urged Morocco not to extradite to China a Uyghur activist arrested a year ago at Casablanca airport.

Yidiresi Aishan, also known as Idris Hasan, had been arrested on the night of July 19-20, 2021 on the basis of a red notice issued by Interpol at the headquarters of China, "for belonging to a terrorist organization."

In a document transmitted to the UN, 45 human rights organizations expressed concern about the decision made on Thursday, December 16, 2021 by the Moroccan Court of Cassation to authorize the extradition to China of Aishan, despite the cancellation by Interpol in August 2021 of the red notice issued against him. According to them, there are serious reasons to believe that he would be in danger of being subjected to torture.

Since this decision, the publication of an extradition decree by Morocco is the only step for the execution of the decision. In this sense, the organizations have urged Morocco not to order this extradition of the activist to China, in accordance with the fundamental principle of non-refoulement.
