Hospital Mix-Up in Morocco: Newborns Switched at Birth Due to Staff Error

Two babies were exchanged at birth on October 26 at the Pagnon hospital in Meknès. After admitting the error, the hospital officials gave their version of the facts of this scandal that has outraged public opinion and sparked a lot of comments.
The incident occurred in the absence of the head nurse due to Covid-19. The on-duty nurse, a new recruit who handed over the two babies, was not yet familiar with the hospital’s operations, said Dr. Samir Mesnane, director of the hospital.
The two families concerned, once contacted, were surprised by this delicate news. They preferred not to comment on this incident. Back at the hospital, a DNA test confirmed the hospital officials’ concerns. Each parent finally left with their (real) baby. An investigation has been opened by the competent prosecutor’s office to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
