UN Honors Moroccan Peacekeepers for Service in Central African Republic

The UN decorated the blue helmets of the Moroccan battalion (MORBATT) of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) on Friday. Morocco has been providing troops and military observers to the mission since December 2014.

The United Nations Information Center in Rabat (CINU) reports that 752 MORBATT blue helmets, based in Bangassou, in southeastern Central African Republic, and three military observers were decorated last Friday with the United Nations medal for their contribution to the return of peace in this country. On this occasion, the Deputy Force Commander of MINUSCA, Major General Paulo Emanuel Maia Pereira, saluted the courage and professionalism of these soldiers deployed in the Central African Republic since April 23, 2020.

"You have worked tirelessly to ensure the accomplishment of MINUSCA’s mandate and that of the Kingdom of Morocco, as a member of the United Nations, you have helped the Central African people to maintain a stable, safe and peaceful environment," said the senior military official. He also congratulated the recipients for the many actions to secure civilian populations as well as for the rehabilitation of roads and public buildings in the prefectures of Mboumou and Haut-Mboumou.

The Deputy Force Commander of MINUSCA also stressed that this distinction is synonymous with the recognition of these efforts. In addition, the UN took into account the fact that the battalion had reached the regulatory period within the mission to award this distinction to these peacekeepers.
