Al Hoceima Prisoners End Hunger Strike After Human Rights Visit

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) informed on Monday of the decision of the inmates tried in the context of the events in Al Hoceima to suspend the hunger strike observed following the recent visit by its delegation.
According to the statement issued by the CNDH, the decision to suspend the hunger strike by the inmates comes following the commitment of the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) to make additional efforts to improve detention conditions and ensure the proper conduct of family visits to inmates.
Indeed, on April 11, the CNDH, in coordination with the DGAPR, had visited the various inmates tried in the context of the events in Al Hoceima, after their transfer from the prisons of Aïn Sebaâ 1 and Oukacha to the penitentiary establishments of Fès, Tangier, Al Hoceima, Nador and Tetouan.
The statement specifies that this visit was carried out in accordance with the prerogatives of the CNDH in the field of prevention and protection of human rights and taking into account the ethical and legal considerations related to the nature of its action, and following its decision to welcome, listen to and interact with the mothers and families of the inmates announced during the briefing on the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture.
The statement, which states that the CNDH has pleaded both for the supremacy of the right to life and for the respect of international detention standards, stresses that the institution also ensures regular and continuous monitoring of the health status of inmates who were on hunger strike.
