Historic Salé Medina Undergoes $90 Million Restoration and Modernization

The rehabilitation work on the medina of Salé, undertaken since 2019, is progressing slowly. Most of the projects included in this upgrading program are still ongoing and the local authorities are calling for respect of the deadlines.
A new life is in store for this millennium-old medina, located on the Atlantic coast and at the mouth of the Bouregreg. According to l’Économiste, it is a matter of 24 projects planned as part of this program divided into 4 areas of intervention. They focus on the rehabilitation of infrastructure, the improvement of traffic as well as the restoration of historical heritage.
With a total cost of 900 million DH, the program also takes into account the strengthening of accessibility to social services and economic attractiveness, particularly with regard to tourism. In 2021, the total amount of commitments reached 440 million DH with an amount of payments close to 90 million DH.
Among the twenty or so projects launched, only two are completed, the rest are under construction. These include the restoration of the medina walls, including two Borjs and three of its former gates.
Several others are very advanced, including the one entrusted to Redal, which includes the rehabilitation of electricity, drinking water and sanitation networks as well as the burying of electrical cables, the newspaper points out. Recall that the end of the work is normally scheduled for 2023.
