To her great surprise, a researcher in tangible and intangible heritage discovered a house built right in the middle of the outer walls of the city of Marrakech, at Bab Doukkala. Outraged, she took photos that she published on social media to launch an appeal for the protection of heritage.
She couldn’t believe her eyes. A house built inside the outer walls of the city of Marrakech, at Bab Doukkala. While on a tour of the Marrakech medina, Amel Mellakh Chafai, a researcher in tangible and intangible heritage, discovered this house, built right in the middle of the outer walls of the city, reports le360.ma.
Interviewed by Le360, Abdellatif Marou, who is acting as the Heritage Inspection Service, explained that this is an infringement that dates back at least 30 years. Moreover, the house was not visible from the outside.
After the evacuation of the occupants, all the houses built on the alignment of the wall were destroyed, except this one.
"All the residents were given land plots. Only the owners of this house resisted [the authorities] and did not accept the compensation. It seems they were more demanding," said Abdellatif Marou.
