Historic Fez Medina Showcased in TF1 Report: Morocco's Cultural Capital Reinvents Itself

The city of Fez, especially its millennium-old medina, was honored by the French channel TF1, which devoted a long report to it in the edition of its 1 p.m. news yesterday, Saturday, April 27.

"Fez, the cultural capital of Morocco and the cradle of its civilization. Its medina is the largest in the world, renovated at the initiative of the king. Far from the museum city, Fez continues to reinvent itself," comments TF1.

The medina of Fez has 8 main gates and some 9,600 alleys, "a real labyrinth and sometimes you need a compass not to get lost." To be able to find your way, you will probably have to ask the locals for directions and like almost all Moroccan medinas, there are no cars, but "you may sometimes encounter donkeys".

For the past few years, the city has been undergoing one of the largest renovation plans for all Moroccan medinas, which will allow tradition and modernity to be combined. TF1 takes the example of a covered market entirely dedicated to babouches. Interviewed, one of the merchants reveals that it is "the most important souk for babouches in Morocco. From Fez, we sell to Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier or even Oujda. All of Morocco and even abroad."
