Historic Christian Cemetery Near Casablanca Vandalized by Treasure Hunters

The Christian cemetery of Mediouna, near Casablanca, is the victim of a wave of vandalism. Out of the sixty or so graves, only one remains almost intact.
The tombs have been looted by individuals searching for the jewelry with which the remains were adorned in their graves. Even the concrete headstones and tombstones have been taken away.
An investigation has been opened, reports the daily Assabah, adding that these acts of theft and desecration are the work of treasure hunter gangs. One of them was already surprised at night by the police and had to flee, leaving its equipment on the spot, according to the same source.
After independence, the Mediouna Christian cemetery, which dates back to the protectorate era, was annexed to the Muslim cemetery and the two were separated by a fence and surrounded by another. Long abandoned to the undergrowth, it has become the object of interest for treasure hunting mafias, concludes the daily.
