Hirak Protester Sentenced to 20 Years for Torching Police Building in Morocco

The 20-year prison sentence has just been confirmed by the Court of Appeal of Al Hoceima against a man accused of having set fire to a police building in Imzouren.
The fire had occurred during the demonstrations of the Hirak movement, recalls the newspaper Al Akhbar, according to which it had taken the police by surprise, forcing them to descend the building using ropes.
The Court of Appeal therefore confirms this heavy sentence pronounced last year by the court of first instance of Al Hoceima.
Born in October 2016 after the death of a fish seller, this protest movement agitated northern Morocco for months, prompting the authorities to send police reinforcements to the area and arrest several hundred people. King Mohammed VI, after the submission of a report, dismissed several ministers accused of shortcomings in the implementation of projects in Al Hoceima and its region.
