Hirak Movement Leaders Face Prison Restrictions After Unrest

In reaction to the "acts of violence", "rebellion, disobedience and attacks against prison officials" of which they have been guilty, the prisoners of the Hirak movement of Al Hoceima have been imposed by the General Directorate of Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) a series of restrictions on the enjoyment of their rights.

According to a statement, it is concluded "a dispersion of prisoners in several different prisons and the sending of several of them to isolation cells".

They will also be deprived of family visits and telephone communications for a period of 45 days, "in application of the law", it is said.

The leader of the Hirak, Nasser Zefzafi, is incarcerated in Fez, in the Ras al Maa prison, while several Rif prisoners are distributed in other prisons, notably those of Tangier and Nador.

Already, in another statement on Friday, the DGAPR reported the refusal of Zefzafi and some of his accomplices to comply with the orders of the prison administration.

In the wake of this, the Director of the Ras al Maa prison as well as three other officials were suspended on the same day, following the controversy linked to a speech recorded by Zefzafi, which had leaked and circulated on social networks, recalls La vanguardia.

In total, 55 Rif people are imprisoned in the context of the popular demonstrations that took place in the Rif region between 2016 and 2017, to denounce the marginalization of the region by the authorities in their development policy, indicates EFE.

These prisoners multiply protest actions, including hunger strikes, to denounce, among other things, their detention conditions.
