Hervé Renard Eyes Return to Morocco for 2026 World Cup Coaching Role

Hervé Renard, the coach of the French women’s team until the 2024 Paris Olympics, has clear ambitions for his future: to lead a men’s national team at the 2026 World Cup. And why not the Moroccan one?
"I have the 2026 World Cup in the back of my mind," he said, specifying that he was open to the idea of representing a different country, or not. This ambition is not new, as he has already participated in two World Cup editions, in 2018 with Morocco and in 2022 with Saudi Arabia.
Morocco, precisely, could be an interesting option for Renard. His positive record with the Atlas Lions (qualification for the 2018 World Cup and a round of 16) and his knowledge of African football make him a serious candidate to succeed Walid Regragui, increasingly contested by the supporters.
A survey conducted by a Moroccan media reveals that 72% of supporters want Hervé Renard’s return. The FRMF had put pressure on Walid Regragui for the two matches the Atlas Lions have just played against Angola and Mauritania in Agadir. These two matches were not up to par as he himself acknowledged and as the Moroccan federation and its president Fouzi Lekjaa probably also think. But between a few setbacks and changing coaches less than three months before the start of the World Cup qualifying matches, there is a step that the FRMF must surely weigh before taking the plunge.
