Hero Rescues Residents from Burning Building in French Town

After a fire broke out in a residential building on Peyrusse Street in France, Said Khattir spontaneously rushed to the rescue of the residents trapped on the upper floors by the flames and smoke.

The fire occurred a few days ago. In the middle of a walk downtown, Said Khattir, a native of Lézignan, saw the black smoke rising from the Place Cabrié on Sunday, March 1, 2020, reports L’Indépendant.

"I didn’t hear any sirens and I suspected that something unusual was happening. I followed my instinct and went to see. On the spot, I saw that there were people outside, and especially residents, trapped on the top floor of a building, who were calling for help... The fire was just below. I went into the building; I triggered the smoke evacuation system on the ground floor and went up," says this former volunteer firefighter at the rescue center.

According to him, some people were afraid and did not want to leave their apartment. But he managed to convince them, then helped them down. "I placed them safely in the parking lot. I went up several times to evacuate five people, sometimes with the help of colleagues, and I also had to carry an elderly lady..." continues Said, now a security guard in Lézignan.

"These people could have died. Some had not heard anything and did not know there was a fire... While the stairwell was already filled with smoke and impassable. Then the firefighters arrived. I gave them a report; I greeted my buddies and went home," he adds.
