Health Officials Seize 1.8 Tons of Illegal Poultry Feed Ahead of Eid al-Adha

Friday 28 June 2019, by Bladi.net

The fight against the trade in poultry manure, intended for the animals to be sacrificed during Eid al-Adha, as led by the services of the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA), is recording edifying results. Indeed, more than 1.8 tons of poultry manure have just been seized.

This fight, led by the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA), in collaboration with the local authorities, which has just recorded the seizure of an impressive quantity of poultry manure, took place, according to the facts reported by Al massae this Friday, June 28, "on a livestock farm in a douar near Khemissat". The seized manure was "destroyed in accordance with the regulations in force," the same media, quoted by Le360, specifies.

Returning to the objectives of ONSSA, the same source states that these operations are held within the framework of "vast initiatives undertaken by ONSSA, to fight against all practices that can alter the quality of the meats of the animals sacrificed on the occasion of Eid, or even their putrefaction". In plain language, unscrupulous merchants use unhealthy methods "aimed at fattening the cattle", hence the "strict control on the part of ONSSA services," the media observes.

The daily also recalls a previous serious incident. Indeed, it recalls, "in 2017, a scandal related to the putrefaction of meats had broken out, causing significant financial damage to citizens, in addition to the risk posed by the consumption of these meats on the occasion of Eid". This explains the rigor of ONSSA which, through its services, proceeds to control the water sources used by the farms for their sheep and the vaccines administered to the animals.

These same services are obliged to verify "the processes by which poultry farms get rid of the manure," concludes the same source, indicating that these operations make it possible to eliminate the risks of nuisance to public health.
