Health Concerns Spark Moroccan Social Media Campaign to Boycott Algerian Dates Ahead of Ramadan

As Ramadan begins in a few days, Moroccan Internet users have launched a boycott campaign of Algerian dates - a fruit heavily consumed during the holy month - on social media. The origin of this boycott is a public health issue.
#Boycott_Algerian_dates. Moroccan Internet users have once again launched a boycott campaign of Algerian dates around this hashtag. According to some initiators of this campaign, Algerian dates would have been grown on land that has undergone nuclear radiation following the French tests in the Algerian Sahara, reports TSA. Others claim that Algerian dates would be "adulterated". "The stated objective of these Internet users is to encourage the consumption of local dates instead of those imported from Algeria and thereby ’do justice to the growers of the Figuig oasis’," summarizes a Moroccan Internet user.
On the Algerian side, the reaction of the Internet users of the eastern neighbor did not wait. "You have every right to boycott a product from this or that country, and to encourage your local product, but don’t make a science fiction film about nuclear radiation that would also affect Moroccan dates in this case," explained an Algerian Internet user, who, like others, highlighted the superior quality of the Algerian date and the excellent reputation it enjoys in the world.
