Health Alert: Dangerous Pesticide Levels Found in Moroccan Mint Supply

Pesticide residues have been found in mint sold in several Moroccan regions, just alerted the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA).

Tests carried out in the wholesale markets of Souss-Massa revealed that the mint leaves sold nationwide have "very high" non-compliance rates that constitute an "imminent risk to consumer health".

ONSSA considers the situation alarming due to the use of unapproved chemicals or high residue levels of approved products.

To address the situation, ONSSA has sent a letter to the Wali of the Souss Massa region in which the regional director of ONSSA requests the support of the local authorities to help its inspectors implement emergency measures.

It also concerns the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region where analyzes have shown the harmfulness of mint leaves with the presence of high doses of authorized pesticides and in some cases the presence of others not authorized in 7 out of 13 samples taken from the wholesale markets in the region.
