Hakim Ziyech refuses to lower his salary, conflict erupts at Wydad

Hakim Ziyech’s refusal to accept a pay cut has strained his relationship with Wydad’s new management to breaking point. Left out of the friendly match against Renaissance Zemamra and the training camp in Agadir, the player has now publicly accused the club president of lying.

The salary dispute has now moved out of the offices and onto the field. Wydad’s new leadership has been seeking for several weeks to reduce Hakim Ziyech’s salary, estimated at between 80,000 and 100,000 euros per month. The former Chelsea player has rejected the various proposals presented to him.

This contract, negotiated upon his highly publicized arrival at Wydad in October 2025, weighs heavily on the club’s wage bill. New president Ibrahim El Asri wants to review the expenses incurred by the former leadership of Hicham Aït Menna, but Ziyech intends to uphold the terms originally agreed.

Wydad initially sought a solution to bring about his departure. The player closed that door, stating his desire to remain in Casablanca and fulfill his commitment. The management then tried to negotiate a pay cut, without any more success.

Ziyech has accepted none of the financial proposals put forward by the club’s directors. This refusal is now being followed by decisions that directly affect his sporting preparations.

“He’ll lie, as always”

Hakim Ziyech showed up for the friendly match against Renaissance Zemamra wearing Wydad clothing, but he was not used. As supporters wondered about his absence, the player responded to them directly in a comment posted on Instagram.

“Go ask your president why he refused to let me play in the match and go to Agadir,” wrote the Moroccan international. He then added: “He’ll probably lie about it, as he always does.”

Ziyech thus personally identifies Ibrahim El Asri as responsible for his absence. He does not present his non-participation as a decision by the coach or as a precaution related to his physical condition, but as a choice imposed by Wydad’s president.

The player also claims that his trip to Agadir was rejected. The club is scheduled to hold a closed training camp there to prepare for the rest of the season. His exclusion from the camp would therefore distance him from the team at a time when the staff must establish its squad and define its new hierarchy.

The situation marks a brutal reversal. A few weeks earlier, a meeting between Ziyech and the new president had raised the possibility that he would stay, or even extend his contract. The management had then dismissed reports of a possible departure as rumors harmful to the club. The disagreement over the salary has evidently shattered that calm.

Wydad has not yet publicly responded to the player’s accusations. But the balance of power now appears clear: Ziyech refuses to leave and reduce his salary, while the management controls his participation in matches and training camps.
