Gibraltar Tunnel: Morocco and Spain are stepping on the gas

Tuesday 5 March 2024, by Sylvanus

Morocco and Spain are working on the realization of the Gibraltar Strait tunnel project that will connect the two countries, but also Africa and Europe, before the 2030 World Cup they are co-hosting with Portugal.

The Gibraltar tunnel is among the major cooperation projects related to the co-organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which were on the agenda of the meeting between the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka and the Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Oscar Puente Santiago, on Monday in Rabat. It emerges from this meeting that the meeting of the Hispano-Moroccan Joint Committee will be held at the end of May next. It will have to result in the development of a roadmap for the evaluation of the studies carried out and the finalization of the design of this strategic project for the two countries, as well as for the African and European continents.

For Nizar Baraka, the project of continental link between Morocco and Spain will contribute to "the consolidation of the distinguished bilateral relations, inscribed in an advanced dynamic". For his part, Oscar Puente Santiago described his meeting with the Moroccan minister as "fruitful". This project, whose budget is estimated at 6 billion euros, could be realized in about five years, i.e. a few months before the co-organization of the 2030 World Cup by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
